Iran: A View of America’s Future?
The events in Iran underscore the dangers of religion and political copulation. The two intertwined in a self-righteous fuck fest ultimately lead to a form of theocratic fascism, and eventually a civil uprising, a revolution of the people whose lives and freedoms have become cannon fodder for religious zealotry. The Republican Right, the religious right, the conservative mullahs of America, are seeing in Iran the results of religious oppression. And yet, they claim some moral high ground when it comes to calling for Obama to intervene in some way? And in the name of freedom? How hypocritical! But, is that really surprising?
An acquaintance of mine said awhile back that America is not more religious now than it was in the very early years of it’s history. I beg to differ. I offer the following link to an article by Frank Schaeffer, a former bible thumper, as Exhibit #1
The Republican Party, and their bigotry, firmly set the stage for a showdown with freedom in the 1950′s with the opening of the McCarthyism door, the Red Scare, and the Republicans call to set America apart from the “Godless Communists”. Fear has always been their game. Enter religious zealots. In the late 70′s and early eighties, the religious right purchased clout from their hateful brethren, the Republican party. And the rest, they say, is history. Check out this book by former conservative bible thumper Kevin Phillips, “American Theocracy”. Exhibit #2 It explains in detail the debauchery of religious influence in Washington. Read… and then tell me how non-religious America is!
