Bill Maher gets the last word!  You have to love creationists…until they get sick and come crawling back to science.

X-tian Love?

Is this really x-tian love?  It is if you believe the bible is the word of a skydaddy.

FUNNIES

From the Wall Street Journal BLOG,  college students who listed their favorite book as “The Bible” or “The Holy Bible” had lower SAT scores than those who listed “Lolita” as their favorite!  And folks call me hateful when I call folks Godidiots and Christards?  LOL!

“…On the book front, Lolita was favorite tome of the brightest students (a result which Griffith called “charming”), with an average SAT score of 1317. The lowest-scoring students liked the erotica author Zane, with an average score of 980. And strangely, the students who listed their favorite book as “The Bible” were smarter (1047) than those who said it was “The Holy Bible” (980)”

ON THE SCIENCE FRONT…

From fact to fiction!

Why I Care About Religion

Here are a couple of excellent videos that explain why this blog exists.  Watch them in their entirety.

The first is an overview of why I care.  The second is a video of Sam Harris, author of  “Letter to a Christian Nation” speaking to an audience in Canada.

Are you willing to be wrong?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 16, 2009 by David 2

It’s a simple question when it comes to what you believe in.

Are you willing to be wrong?

Believer or non-believer… are you so sure about what you believe in that you are willing to be wrong?

Let’s suppose that tomorrow there is a 500km asteroid that hits the planet.  (Yeah, like you think NASA would spot it in time, right?  Or that we’d be notified of it?)  We’re all toast in a matter of minutes.  There is no last-minute team of crackpots and astronauts launching to save the world with an Aerosmith soundtrack and some Made-For-Fox patriotic montages.  Morgan Freeman will not be promising to rebuild.  We wouldn’t even have time to meet with that long-lost family member that we disowned just so we could forgive them for being jerks.  There would be no shelters or arks that would save humanity.  There wouldn’t be any time for them.  We’d be dead.  All of us.  Well, okay, maybe the folks at the International Space Station would live, but not for long.  They would run out of air and food eventually and there wouldn’t be any left here to get.

Let’s suppose that out of some freak of cosmic nature, we are all given one minute (60 human seconds) after we are all toast to be told the ultimate universal truth of who was RIGHT about the hereafter.  (I know it’s not a physical possibility, but work with me on this one, okay atheists?)  If A certain belief is right about the hereafter, we all find ourselves subject to their judgment after that minute… and if the atheists are right, then after the minute is up, it’s just game over.

If the non-believers are right, that would suck for the believers, wouldn’t it?  I mean, sure they might live virtuous lives and all, but that’s it.  And think of all of the stuff that they miss out on.  No sex before marriage… no booze… no eating certain foods… all of that money spent on donations… 60 seconds of denial, anger, and some regret… and then game over.

But if A certain belief turns out to be right, does it mean that ALL believers win?  No.

For starters, A belief does not necessarily mean that YOUR belief is the one that is right.  Obviously if it is your belief then you get to gloat.  But you have to consider that with all of these different faiths, all of these different interpretations, all of these different dogmas, that any one of them COULD be the “right” one.  Wouldn’t that be an ethereal kick in the mouth to find out that one of those little cult groups that you used to make fun of gets the free pass and you don’t?

And what happens to you then?  You would probably be subject to whatever rule the “right” one has about non-believers.   Again, great if YOUR belief is the one that gets the nod, but sucks if you aren’t.

Or maybe none of them get it!  Maybe NONE of the current faiths are the right one.

Imagine finding out in that cosmic “grace minute” that the “right” belief was one that was practiced 1500 years ago in Europe that ended up being hunted down and driven to extinction by followers of YOUR faith.  Boy that would REALLY be an awkward moment wouldn’t it?  Good luck explaining that one.

But the believers I converse with don’t think such things… because they have it in their minds that they are right.  Being “wrong” doesn’t even factor into the equation, because as far as they are concerned, they are RIGHT… PERIOD!

And if by some astronomically remote chance that they aren’t “the ones”, then they have a couple of ways they try to “game” the system.

The first is the neutralization and minimization of any other belief.  This is the reason why they feel the need to have governments large and small endorse and sanction their beliefs at every corner and have symbols of THEIR faith at every plot of land and every piece of property.  It’s more than just ego-gratification and narcissism-by-proxy.  If everything in the world says that “X-belief” is the only one out there, then it goes that the followers of “X-belief” win.  Or at least that’s the theory.

It’s essentially a “win” by attrition and branding.  But it presupposes that the “X-belief” curries favor with that supreme being, because if not then they just condemned everyone on the planet.

The second way is sort of a “pass”.  It’s a fallback to the attrition/branding effort.  Think of it as a “Get Out Of Oblivion Free” card.  It operates on the assertion that even if your faith is not “the chosen” faith that you still curry favor with the ultimate cosmic power simply by being the best that you can and that it should be “good enough” to get you in.

Let’s say that you’re a Baptist and the Lutherans end up being “the” faith.  All you have to do is say “hey, we’re all Christians!  I’m a Christian.  They’re Christians.  We should be allowed in anyway.”

Unless, of course, it’s YOUR belief that is “the” belief.  Then you’re not-so generous about it, are you?  No, usually you’re the one that would be saying “HEY, they may be Christians, but they’re not the RIGHT kind of Christians!  They’re not like us!  Go suck brimstone with the rest of the losers!”

BUT that’s only presuming that they could even possibly be WRONG… which they will firmly tell you that they are most certainly NOT!

That’s not to say that the atheists are any better at this.  Some of them can be very boisterous in their convictions not just that they are RIGHT, but that those who believe are WRONG.  However at least they know what is at stake here.  They’re not trying to hedge their bets or to game the system.  (By the way, atheists, please don’t get into this whole “non-belief is not a belief” debacle.  That’s a subject for future discussion.)

So it all goes back to my original question… are you confident enough in your belief to not just be RIGHT, because it’s easy to be right, but also be willing to be WRONG?

IF it turns out that what you believe is not right, IF it turns out that the path to salvation was not a road but a cliff, are you confident enough to be willing to accept the consequences?  That’s what it is to be willing to be WRONG.

Remember, that huge rock could fall tomorrow.

Just a little something for people of any kind of belief to ponder.

HATE?

Posted in Uncategorized on May 14, 2009 by RJ Evans

I’ve been writing about religion since 2005.  In that time, I have had my share of critics.  All are religious, and all attempt to argue their point from the biblical position.  When cornered, the godidiots fall back on the old standard, faith.  But, every once and awhile someone decides that a better mode of wreck-less defense is to accuse me of being extremist, a hate monger.  This IS truly a reach, a deaf, dumb and blind, wild and flailing excuse. What these “angels of idiocy” continuously ignore is that for the last 4 years, I have REPEATEDLY, unabashedly, undeniably DEFENDED their right to believe in any supernatural bullshit they choose.  Time and again, I have stated publicly that I would be more than willing to lay down my life to protect their right.  But, alas, most of these retards don’t get the fuckin’ message.

Let me CLEARLY state for the record…  I don’t hate ANYONE based on their religious beliefs.  Period.  Since when does challenging someones belief qualify as hate?  Since when does demanding scientific PROOF of a skydaddy qualify as hate?  Since when does calling people godidiots or christards qualify as hate?  Any offense taken is the responsibility of the person being offended!  For fuck sake, these people need to take some personal responsibility!

I respect PEOPLE, not ideologies.  I can separate the person from the godidiocy.  I measure a person’s character, regardless of their skydaddy beliefs.  What’s more, those who know me, and would accuse me of doing otherwise are living in a grand delusion, a serious side effect of their religious zealotry.  It’s truly a shame that my character is discounted in favor of religious blinders.

Once again…and again…and again… I will not judge a person on their religious bullshit.  I WILL judge them on their character.  BUT, I’m most certainly NOT going to shrivel away from challenging religious beliefs simply because someone might be “offended” or feel “slighted” by those challenges.  Religion does not deserve respect.  People do, and it must be earned.

“Parroting” Scientific Fact

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on May 8, 2009 by RJ Evans

An acquaintance of mine, a believer who claims to be all-science-savvy because he’s a talented meteorologist, sent me a comment on one of my posts awhile back.  He stomped his arrogance forward and proclaimed that everything I say here is nothing more than “parroting” the Atheist screed.  On the subject of science vs. religion he declared, rather boldly and with disdain, that I am not qualified to speak about science because I’m not a scientist and I haven’t published scientific papers like himself.  Indeed, I’m not a scientist by profession.  He is.  He is in the field of meteorology.  I’m an observer, reader, thinker and all around inquisitor.  I’m also a skeptic.  I understand the basic principles of science.  I wasn’t aware that I needed a degree and published papers to grasp the methods and idea behind its purpose?  I guess I’m just some stupid schmuck who “parrots” the Atheist screed,  a “dogma” of non-belief based on nothing more than supposition, lack of scientific evidence, and lacking in scientific paper publishing? Wait a minute!  Hey, isn’t that religion?  Nah.  I couldn’t possibly grasp the concept of testable, falsifiable evidence and rigorous review?  Hey, that sounds like religion too! Nah.  I’m just a dickhead who “parrots” the Atheist screed, a horrific dribble of lies and deceit formulated to misinform and truncate the religious believer.  Never mind that one of the world’s leading evolutionary biologists, Richard Dawkins,  of  Oxford University is Atheist.  Never mind that 65-75% of National Academy of Science scientists consider themselves Atheist. Nah.  We’re all just a bunch of liars.  Evolution is bullshit we created a shitload of evidence for because we wanted to fuck with the believers.  Hey, everyone likes a good conspiracy! Right?

My acquaintance is rather arrogant to claim a lock on the scientific method.  Indeed, he’s nothing more than a talented meteorologist.  Very talented at it.  I applaud him.  But he’s also a fool.  To claim that I can’t speak on general matters of the scientific method with any authority because I’m not a scientist, and haven’t published any papers, is the equivalent of telling an American voter that they can’t vote because they’re not a politician!

The fact is that in every one of our email and comment exchanges, my acquaintance has failed miserably to argue effectively for the existence of a skydaddy, AND he has “parroted” more christard bullshit, WITHOUT evidence, and without any authority other than his bible, than I “parrot” of facts, figures, logic, and reason combined! And he wonders why I don’t publish his pathetic diatribes of dogma?  Please! My acquaintance doesn’t know when he’s lost.

When the facts are made clear, have been thoroughly tested, and stand up to the rigors of science, bullshit decays quickly in the heat of knowledge.  I may “parrot” others from time to time.  But, I do so because the facts weigh heavy upon the ridiculous claims of the ignorant.  It forces them to confront the reality of their selfish lie.  I read, and I examine with a critical eye what I read.  I don’t take anything at face value…unlike my acquaintance who puts all his cash on a single 2000+ year old trash novel with tales of the supernatural, empty promises, and threats  to intoxicate the reader.

My acquaintance claims science as his focus, but only as far as his short nose and big head.  A man with a tremendous talent for severe weather meteorology, unmatched by many in the field, is one thing.  But, simply because he’s great in that field, doesn’t make him an authority on all of science. What’s more, to withhold the rigors of scientific method he so staunchly demands in his field, from his personal life is an absolute travesty.

I have said this before…

If you lay claim to science, then you better fucking live by it.  Period.  If you don’t, you’re a fucking hypocrite.  End of story.

America’s Noisiest Atheist…Why?

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on May 8, 2009 by RJ Evans

A good friend of mine from Canada described me as  “America’s noisiest Atheist” in his outdoor adventure television series “Angry Planet” back in 2006.  I doubt I’m the noisiest.  There are others more qualified I’m sure.  Anyway… George Korounis had invited me to join him for one of his inaugural episodes during the first season of his show and I was thrilled for his new found success, agreeing to participate if he’d return the favor and do my Internet radio show “American Heathen®”.  We made the deal.  George is a resident of Toronto, and a non-believer himself.  In Canada, non-belief is typically a non-issue according to George, and he couldn’t quite understand why I was so passionate over the issue here in the States.  I explained to my dear friend that the reason for my ravenous rantings was the religious zealotry that has become so prevalent over the past 25 years in politics and society in general.  Without the checks and balances of voices like mine, our freedom would wither away.  The noisier, the better.

I have had many people ask me why I’m so passionate, why I have such a big mouth.  I have had many ask me why I have to make so much noise, why I can’t simply “leave it alone”.  All are believers in a christian skydaddy of varying degrees.  In any event, the question of  “why?” is an easy one to answer.  It’s called the Separation of Church and State.  From abortion and stem cell research to the teaching of creationism- from prayer in schools to “One Nation Under God” in the pledge of allegiance- from gay marriage to “family values”, the United States Constitution is under attack, and the Separation of Church and State, the cornerstone of our republic, is the only tenet that stands between American citizens freedom to believe or not,  and theocratic rule under one sole interpretation of a skydaddy.  Without the protection that this explicit, and implicit, Constitutional ideal bestows upon our way of life, NO ONE is free to THINK for themselves.

My issues with religion in general are simple and straight forward.  Believe what you want, but keep it to yourself.  A person’s beliefs in supernatural beings have no business playing out in a political arena.  Would you accept a political agenda based on stories of a Tooth Fairy governing you? More importantly – for those who are of the more liberal/moderate christian persuasion – why do you casually watch from the sidelines as your freedoms are threatened thinking to yourself , “I’m not an extremist.  Why should I care? These folks aren’t really christians.”  What is a christian anyway?  And, who’s version of the bible is really christian?

One of my most passionate rants against religion, christianity in particular, is the false notion that if a believer doesn’t subscribe to fundamentalist belief, they are somehow NOT part of the problem.  I constantly hear from the liberal/moderate believers about this.  The fact is that either they believe the bible is the word of god or they don’t.  If the believer does, then they are one stone’s throw away from extremism.  If believers don’t believe the bible is the word of god, then they are CHOOSING to second guess the bible and therefore have created their own version of a god, in their own image, to best fit their lifestlye.  Don’t believe me?  Then the 33,800 versions of christianity are an aberration huh?  Picking and choosing one’s way through scripture is NOT accepting the bible as the word of god.  Exclusion of ANY scripture is second guessing god is it not?  But, the liberal/moderate will argue that the bible was written by man to explain what god wants, right?  Once again, if the believer resorts to this dodge, then they have completely destroyed the supernaturally inspired premise of the book.  Injecting human interpretation into the equation creates error.  If there is error then, how will the believer know what is in error and what is not?  Oh yeah, prayer!  Or, as I like to call it, self-fulfilling, self-aggrandizing, self-absorbed schizophrenia (a group of severe mental disorders characterized by reality distortions resulting in unusual thought patterns and behaviors).

Liberal/moderate believers claim that their version of jebus is loving, caring and compassionate.  They claim that this version (read new testament) is the “right” one to celebrate.  However, there is a real problem here.  Jebus was a moody guy.  He may have said some nice things from time to time, but he also affirmed and endorsed the old testament, a violent book:

“For truly I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes on of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.  For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven”

-MATTHEW 5:18-20

The teachings of the bible are full of confusion and contradiction.  Think about it!  Christards happily burned alive non-believers, heathens, and heretics for 500 years!  If you don’t believe me, read some fuckin’ history!  Liberal/Moderate believers are one cult-of-personality away from repeating history!  They will join the extreme and it will be based on a 2000+ year old dime store novel, and the word “faith” will be used once again to validate the atrocities.

So, why am I supposedly America’s Noisiest Atheist?  Do you really have to ask?

A Hearty Welcome!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 7, 2009 by RJ Evans

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome a great author/contributor to my blog.  David2 has been a friend of mine since 2005 when I started my Internet radio show “American Heathen®”.  His contributions to the show, both as a caller and later as a commentator, were enormous and essential to the successful 3 1/2 year run.   David is a great thinker, and a great person.  His talent is only matched by his kindness, generosity, and honesty.  I consider David one of my closest friends. And believe me when I say, I can count my true friends on one hand.

David is a Libertarian like myself.  Unlike some who claim Libertarian, David is far from being a lunatic anarchist.  His social sensitivity, realistic devotion to principles of responsible government, personal responsibility and compassion, put him at the top of the Libertarian platform in my opinion.  His rabid defense of Constitutional principles is equal to mine. While David has spiritual leanings, he does not confer those beliefs on others in any way.  Nor does he demand recognition or respect of those beliefs. He keeps them to himself and does so out of respect for others, and himself.  We both agree wholeheartedly that the Constitution protects the right to believe anything one wants, but does not protect those beliefs from scrutiny, criticism, or ridicule.  But, then again, if everyone took David’s example, this blog wouldn’t exist.  So, without further pontification, I welcome David to my American Heathen® blog.
